One amazing Soundwave resident at the Liquid Soul stage is coming all the way back from Austin Texas to play an upbeat set of dance floor blazers. This is also going to be Vancouver’s own DJ Smoothie’s first night playing at Victoria’s number one dance music venue.

DJ Chicken George’s (CG) unique “Jazztronica” style of incorporating and fusing diverse genres of music has granted him several international appearances in Sweden, Paris, Amsterdam, Vancouver, the Middle East and across the U.S. including Los Angeles, New York, Chicago, San Francisco, Portland, Las Vegas, Detroit and Philly. CG also deejayed on extensive radio tours with sets on Betalounge Radio, Dublab.com, Eavesdrop Radio & Beatsauce Radio hosted by Om Records’ recording artist, J-Boogie. CG has shared the stage with a wide range of talent including The Wailers, Pete Rock, Jazzanova, John Legend, Cody ChesnuTT, Spoon, Echo and the Bunnyman, Grandmaster Flash, Brad Paisley, Biz Markie, Grupo Fantasma, The Neptunes, Saul Williams, The Roots, Talib Kweli, DJ Jazzy Jeff, Sharon Jones & The Dap Kings, KC & the Sunshine Band, Afrika Bambaataa, Antibalas Afrobeat Orchestra and Erykah Badu.
CG knew at a young age that his intrigue and passion for music would become a life-long endeavor. His appreciation for music can largely be attributed to his parents who made music an important part of family life. He was born in Boston, Massachusetts, later moved to Houston, Texas and is currently residing in Austin, Texas. Arriving in March of 2003, he quickly became a local favorite and was voted Best Live (Club / Party) DJ for the Austin Chronicle “Best of Austin” Readers Poll.
Chicken George is also going to drop an hour of down tempo music at the Whitebird lounge. If you haven’t been there since the grand reopening this month you should definitely treat yourself to some pre-martinis. A special menu brought to you with help from the genius behind Red Fish Blue Fish.
Whitebird embodies everything a great lounge should be: an intimate setting, relaxed atmosphere and exquisite food and drink.
Funky urban art adorns the walls of the lounge’s modernly designed subterranean space, which boasts a beautifully constructed bar and a mixture of booths and tables. The menu is casual fine dining with west-coast flair, whether it be staples like their perfectly steamed mussels and delicious sandwiches or an always-changing fresh sheet featuring mains such as sesame-crusted seared tuna. Be sure to check out their extensive martini list, which is home to over 50 different signature cocktails—and if you have a hard time deciding, one of Whitebird’s professional, friendly staff is always happy to make a recommendation. If martinis aren’t your style, there’s a solid wine list and local beer on tap. Adding to the lounge’s cozy-but-chic vibe are a regular rotation of some of the city’s best live DJs, spinning everything from old-school funk and soul to the latest in chilled-out drum-and-bass. Whitebird Lounge is also a great place to book a birthday party or private event.

Last time Dieselboy played victoria there were over 400 people rocking out at Sugar nightclub. He just played an amazing set at Soundwave the west coast’s favorite beach party and we are going to bring him back for a encore performance at our favorite little club Hush.
Vancouver’s Manos One and Hush dj Comp finalist dj Spoon are going to be rotating with half hour sets on the warm up so try and make it down early to hear some great music from these two. Limited $ 15 tickets will be available at Whitebird - ( 768 Yates St, 250.380.7040 ) or online at www.Islandjungle.com
Please try and get your tickets early to avoid dissapointment at the door.
The best known face and sound in American drum and bass for over a decade belong to Brooklyn-based Dieselboy, aka Damian Higgins. Now an international icon in this volatile, UK-originated underground dance music movement, Dieselboy is the most in demand American d&b DJ on the global club, festival and rave circuits on six continents. Always keen to build alliances within the d&b community, Dieselboy has toured with other DJ’s including Technical Itch & Decoder, DJ Rap, DJ Fresh, Bad Company UK, and Hive.
Truly one of the world’s great ambassadors of drum & bass. In 2000 Dieselboy united with two other North American d&b legends, AK1200 and DJ Dara to create a d&b super-tour, the Planet of the Drums. With MC Messinian who joined in 2001, the POTD moved d&b out of the side rooms and onto the main stages. 2008 marks the POTD’s 9th tour, the longest running annual electronic dance music tour of any genre.

The FORT KNOX FIVE is a leading force in the international funk and breaks scene. Having released an arsenal of floor rocking singles and remixes, the FORT KNOX FIVE has the midas touch for producing heavy hitting records
For their highly anticipated debut album, RADIO FREE D.C., the FORT KNOX FIVE took things back to their roots, and kept the vibe centered around the city they love, Washington D.C. Home to many pioneering artists like Marvin Gaye, Chuck Brown and Fugazi, they draw upon their city’s rich musical heritage of funk, soul, punk and hip-hop for their inspiration. The FORT KNOX FIVE invited their close friends from around the Nation’s Capitol, including Asheru (Unspoken Heard), Mustafa Akbar, Rootz & Zeebo (See-I), Sleepy Wonder, Javier Miranda, and Ian Svenonius (Nation of Ulysses/The Make Up) to help them create a record that captures DC’s musical diversity.
Keep a close eye and ear peeled for RADIO FREE D.C. REMIXED due out in July of 2009. This compilation will feature remixes of original tunes from the RADIO FREE D.C. album. Such luminaries as The Nextmen, A Skillz, Nick Thayer, Deekline & Ed Solo featuring Shunda K, Malente, and Sub Swara lent a hand to rework these songs into a completely new form.
In support of the release of RADIO FREE D.C. and RADIO FREE D.C. REMIXED, the FORT KNOX FIVE will tour as Djs, and a live band. For their live show, the FORT KNOX FIVE will perform as a full-on live band bringing many of the artists featured on the album to perform songs that will inspire, incite and unite audiences to “Funk 4 Peace!”
Visit www.fortknoxrecordings.com for the latest info on FORT KNOX FIVE releases and tour dates.

With less than a month away we are busy getting things ready for the wave. This past weekend we took a trip to mussel beach to see what the site was looking like and I am pleased to report back that everything looks great. All the campsites are grown in nicely and the stage setups made it through the winter just fine. While up there we were planning what to build for this years festival, we also pretty much have the lineup sorted with set times and all. So that means if you are a dj playing on our stage expect to get an email from me sometime really soon. With Dieselboy, Calibre, Moving Fusion, Chicken George, Mutt and the Smalltown Dj’s all confirmed to play our stage I think we are set to have the best Soundwave yet. Tickets are now available at Whitebird, so get on down and get on it as this is going to be the best Soundwave in ten years.

We are very pleased to have dj dubgnostic play music in the lounge every third Saturday of the month. So that falls on the 20th of June this month. Expect to hear dub, techno, breaks and a little bit of everything thrown into the mix. Dubgnostic has been a staple of the west coast electronic music scene for years and compliments what we are doing down here at Whitebird perfectly.

This Friday we have the an opening of the artwork of the Jillian Brooks. Jillian does an aerosol based take on the zodiac signs and we have dubbed the show “a sign of urban life” and it will run until July 6th.
Whitebird will be closed from july 7th until the 15th as we partake in the Soundwave music festival in Ukulet. Once again we are involved with the bookings and production for the liquid soul sound stage. This year we have a great mix of friend and favorites of past parties as we celebrate the tenth year of this amazing festival. Our lineup for music with time slots and all should be totally finished soon and can be seen a soundwavemusicfestival.ca.

John B
